Calling Walt Disney World "the most ideologically important piece of land in the United States," anthropologist Fjellman, a respectful cynic, offers a wide-ranging, often jargon-laden analysis of "this quintessence of the American Way." Intrepid readers unwilling to take Disney World at face value may find much that is rewarding here. Fjellman argues that Disney provides a utopian antidote to everyday life, which is fragmented and confused in "late capitalist society." After academic excursions concerning culture and consumerism, Fjellman analyzes Disney's distorted approach to history ("time is defined spatially," as in Tomorrowland), the corporate ideology infusing EPCOT Center and the machinations of Disney's Orlando land grab. He tracks the daily details: the transportation system as social control, the psychology of refuse disposal and the five keys to Disney's system of managing people on line. The 10 national pavilions of World Showcase, Fjellman writes, offer the message that other countries "are essentially theme parks." He concludes that Disney World is "postmodern"--a place where the distinction between real and fake is no longer important.

Seminal Book on Walt Disney World

With this incredibly detailed analysis of Walt Disney World, Stephen Fjellman has created one of the seminal books for Disney Studies. Fjellman draws connections between Walt Disney World and the "real" world in order to try and investigate their relationship. What is often forgotten about the book is perhaps its most important quality: it is subtitled "Walt Disney World and America."
This is the heart of the book. Fjellman's book is as much about America as it is about Disney. He uses Walt Disney World to ask questions, and maybe even offer some answers, about a broad range of issues in American culture: urbanism, capitalism, history, technology, communication, visual culture, and so forth. Underlying his book is the assertion that to explore Walt Disney World is to explore America. And this exploration is why the study of Disney is so essential.
The book accomplishes what so many academic books fail to do--it speaks to many audiences, for many different reasons, to many different purposes. Those interested in learning just about Walt Disney World will not be disappointed, for the book is filled with details and technical information about the park. Those already familiar with the park will appreciate the contributions to their knowledge. Those not wanting to "spoil" the experience of exploring the park themselves need not fear, for the book captures a moment in the park's history and opens up (rather than answers) questions. Scholars interested in both Disney and American culture should find this book of value, both in its attention to detail and its serious consideration of Disney as a site of critical enquiry. Throughout, the strength of Fjellman's work is in his enthusiastic approach to his subject, which encourages and almost forces readers to become as invested in the subject as Fjellman himself.
Although this hefty book can be a bit dense at times, particularly because it draws from theoretical perspectives and considers historical, political, and cultural influences, the book never loses its appeal--partly because it is grounded in the "Magic Kingdom."
If one is going to read just one academic book about Walt Disney World, this is the one. Witty and thought-provoking, critical and inquisitive, it sets the standard for works in the field of Disney Studies.

The Ultimate Book on Walt Disney World

At times, "Vinyl Leaves" can be as magical as the theme park that it seeks to decontruct. Throughout the text, Stephen Fjellman's tone shifts often from witty to sentimental to cynical--but at all times, it remains an intellectual commentary on a place many people would never even think to look at in such "mature" ways. This is a cultural, political, and economical history of Walt Disney World from the earliest plans through the publication time of this book (1992). Despite this hefty doctoral thesis subject matter, the text rarely drags and can sometimes be downright magical. Written in 1992, "Vinyl Leaves" is also a unique period piece, capturing a highly detailed snapshot of the Walt Disney World of the late 1980s/early 1990s. As frequent visitors know, WDW is ever-changing and certain ride removals or renovations can rob a die-hard Disney fan of a piece of their past. With such rides as "Horizons" which was closed in Epcot Center in the mid-1990s, Fjellman delivers a three-to-four page description of the ride, literally second-by-second, thus preserving a classic Disney attraction that will never see the light of day again. Putting aside all of his wonderful theories and commentaries, the sheer value of these deliciously vivid ride and show descriptions is worth the price alone. If you love Walt Disney World, do yourself a favor and buy this book and read every single word. It is honestly the closest book I've ever read that captures the essence of a real trip there.

Still THE scholarly standard...

I keep hoping that Fjellman will update his seminal book to encompass all that has happened in the last ten years; I'll be the first in line when he does. I wrote my MA thesis at NYU on Disney using Fjellman as a prime source, and have used various chapters from Fjellman's book to teach graduate classes in museum studies, design, and architecture. Students in many fields find a lot to think about, discuss, debate, and apply to their thinking.
Witty, engaging, balanced, factually accurate, yet still with a point of view... a great book all around. Other reviewers who complain about the writing level, or some of the more obscure academic theorizing, are missing the point. For a truly academic piece of literature, it is written in incredibly accessible, engaging, and clear style. Highly recommended.

Mutua contends that in fact the human rights corpus, though well meaning, is a Eurocentric construct for the reconstitution of non-Western societies and peoples with a set of culturally biased norms and practices.

Mutua maintains that if the human rights movement is to succeed, it must move away from Eurocentrism as a civilizing crusade and attack on non-European peoples. Only a genuine multicultural approach to human rights can make it truly universal. Indigenous, non-European traditions of Asia, Africa, the Pacific, and the Americas must be deployed to deconstruct—and to reconstruct—a universal bundle of rights that all human societies can claim as theirs.

Third World Critique of Human Rights Movement

Mutua's book is a must-have for those seeking to understand why a hegemonic, westernized approach to human rights is so problematic. Speaking from the perspective of an "insider/outsider" (the author is a leading international human rights scholar and activist from Kenya), he examines both the positive aspirations and contributions of human rights as well as evidence of its limitations and even dangers in practice.

Rather than embrace a strong version of cultural relativism, Mutua clearly condemns violations of human rights in both North and South. Nevertheless, he demands that human rights leaders must spend time in self-examination with regard to the history, origins, and contemporary contexts in which violations occur if abuses are to be effectively combatted.

There is much here for debate and discussion both inside classrooms and among activists in the field. Along with works by Anghie, Gathii, Rajagopal, Woods & Lewis, Andrews, Knop, Wing, and others, Mutua's book is a foundational contribution to the loose network known as the "Third World Approaches to International Law" (TWAIL) movement.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

A good introduction to classical music

Given the complexity of classical music, it is not surprising that many people find it confusing and intimidating. With all those terms like "sonata-allegro form" and "contrapuntal texture", it's easy to feel intimidated when trying to make sense of an hour long symphony. Fortunately, Aaron Copland does a good job explaining the basics of how music is structured.

This book covers music, specifically classical music, from several different angles. These include the sensual, expressive, and musical aspects, but also the way elements like rhythm, harmony, and melody interact to form music. Copland also covers musical texture from simple unaccompanied melodies to the complexities of counterpoint.

Copland also gives a basic overview of the history of classical music and how it evolved from unaccompanied religious chants to organum to counterpoint and accompanied melodies. He also mentions how composers do their work and his perspectives and experiences with composition.

On the negative side, the book is very dated, to say the least, refering to 30s era records and "the rhythm-based music of savage tribesmen". However, that shouldn't stop

Outbreak: The Hunger

In Outbreak: The Hunger, author Scott Shoyer, of the Anything Horror website, has written a zombie story that is fresh and fascinating. Shying away from most of the typical plot details that zombie stories live by, Outbreak has more in common with chase films and beastly freak films than a George Romero opus.
Several stories interconnect as we follow a group of animal rights activists releasing infected animals, two people from an animal rescue shelter, and a father and daughter out for a quick day at the Austin Zoo. Once the animals are released by the first group, a chain reaction of violence and survival is set into play.

The first group we encounter is frustratingly similar to the film 28 Days Later, so much so that the author even makes mention of it via the narration of one of the characters. I’ll be honest, the first quarter of this book is a bit of a chore to get through. The pacing is a little off and some of the dialogue and narration are repetitive. The characters make some very stupid decisions and the story is an awkward and jumbled mess right out the gate. The weirdness of zombie hamsters is tough to get behind. When I first read it I laughed out loud. The story is taken very seriously, never played for laughs, so you have to find the right rhythm in order to get behind this oddball decision.

Once the book is about a third of the way through, the repetition in narrative and exposition from the characters comes to an end and Shoyer’s story really begins to take off. Up to this moment, all of the dread that has been building gets knocked away and never maintains its course. Luckily, once the animals start attacking in the zoo and the epic train attack happens, things pick up. The violence and emotion are taken to new heights. At this point in the novel, I couldn’t put it down.

The cover to this book is very misleading, there are virtually no zombies in this story. I believe the author is saving that for the sequel. What we do have is a great example of how a zombie apocalypse starts while avoiding the same old troupes of zombie fiction. Yes, there is a virus, of sorts, but it is much different. The explanation is only teased. Shoyer gives us plenty of information but there is clearly something far more sinister and intriguing than a standard rabies/rage/virus. The mystery element and narrative told through the eyes of the military groups are some of the most interesting ideas in this novel.

Society is being flooded with zombie novels, games, movies, etc., sometimes it is hard to find the gems in all of the junk. Shoyer’s novel is a fun, fast paced (once you get past the first quarter of the book) read that sets up quite nicely for a sequel. The premise of having zoo animals as the zombies is a fresh take on a tired subgenre of horror. It is pretty rare that I enjoy zombie stories due to the flooding of the market but this book, as well its upcoming sequel, support enough great ideas, violence and emotional heft to give it new life.

Shock and awe

I absolutely loved this book. As a horror fan I'm always looking for stories that are not just scary but also filled with great action. I want in-your-face horror and over-the-top action that delivers non-stop fear and excitement. That's exactly what this book does. It takes off right away and never lets up until the very end when the final shock is an unbelievable sucker punch to the gut. It's a zombie novel with a great new twist and amazing scenes. You'll never visit a zoo or ride a train again the same way. But the real secret of the book is the way the writer gets you to care about the characters, especially John and his daughter Fi, which makes the story even more powerful and intense. This book is an absolute must read for any horror-action fan.

Scott Shoyer has served up a very tasty morsel on his first time out as an author. When the story began, I wasn't sure where it was headed. And by the end of the story, it was clear that the reader is kept on the suspense edge until the very last scene. Wow, what a great first novel...well told...fast-paced...crying out for a sequel. Bravo, zombies. Bon appetit.

I was thrilled to receive my copy of "poetry and pearls" in the mail this week. Tonight I sat down and read through it. Since I'm a fan of n.r. hart's writing, I knew I'd love the poems, but I wasn't prepared for how visually appealing their presentation would be. This is definitely the most aesthetically appealing book of poetry that I own. If you are familiar with the Pearls Slipping Off A String page on Facebook, you know the kind of richly visual backgrounds which n.r. hart often uses for her poems. This book contains 239 of them (conveniently indexed) and color reproductions abound. Thematically grouped into four seasons, the poems thoroughly explore the emotional depths of love and passion, with evocative and memorable imagery. It's wonderful to have these poems collected in book form, especially since I often don't end up having as much time to browse poet pages, as I'd like. If you want a feast for the eyes and heart (or just want to get a little drunk on love), I highly recommend picking up a copy today!

strategy and dictatorships

Boudreau's theory is simple: dictators and protesters adapt strategies according to their opportunities and contexts. At times, the theory seems perhaps a bit too broad to make predictions, but Boudreau's application of the theory to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Burma helps put these authoritarian systems in a new light. In Indonesia, the New Order massacred Communists because they had networks throughout the countryside, where the army was relatively weak. By contrast, Burma's military focused on urban student protests because they represented the only viable element of democratic politics, whereas the army had strong anti-insurgent capabilities in the countryside. Marcos' regime wavered partly because of his lack of elite support and partly because Marcos came from the same social class as many of the protesters. Definitely worth reading for students of Southeast Asian studies.

Are you going to love this book? Yeth!

If you've read and liked Blood Trinity, you're absolutely going to love Alterant, and you already know that's Feenix saying "Yeth, da**it!" *grin* Alterant includes more of the little gargoyle, so if you're like me, you'll be happy to get your "Feenix Fix."

It was clear by the end of Blood Trinity that Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love were setting readers up for a big series. It just wasn't clear HOW big that series was going to be. The answer is, it's going to be huge. Love has become known for her fantastic, twisted suspense plots and weaving a story that's a complex puzzle. Kenyon's Dark Hunter/Dream Hunter romance series spans more than 20 books. Her ability to build worlds and characters is unmatched.

But this is urban fantasy, and these two authors are pulling out all the stops, giving readers the best of all of it. The world is fascinating, with characters, both good and evil, who are rich and evolving. Gods and goddesses, witches, demons, and heroes and heroines both human and preternatural, and not a cardboard cliché among them. Set that in an alternate Atlanta that feels real--one you won't want to leave--then combine it with fast-paced action and the human race in danger, and this writing team has raised the bar for urban fantasy.

Alterant takes us deeper into the lives and loves of Evalle, Tzader and Quinn, and I won't give spoilers, but I will say, be ready for an almost unfair number of "OMG!" moments. Alterant is brand new, but I'm already impatient for the next book.

The word "epic" is so overused, but both Kenyon and Love bring powerhouse writing talent to the page, and the combination has produced stories, and (I hope) a long-running series that is worthy of the word.

I Couldn't Put It Down!!!

The first book in this wonderful urban fantasy series, Blood Trinity, promised a lot more to come and ALTERANT really delivers on that promise. Personally, I love a high action story and a kickass heroine, both of which Kenyon and Love provide in this book with a little added romance on the side. This was a great urban fantasy read with a well-developed mythology, complex characters, and inventive plot twists. I found myself so engrossed in what was happening with the heroine, Eval, that I literally could not read fast enough to see how it was going to end. This one will definitely keep you glued to the page and missing sleep to finish it!

Richly complicated and worth paying attention

Poor Evalle can't catch a break. She was able to thwart the plans of the Kujoo and recover the powerful stone she was sent to find in Blood Trinity, but her troubles are only beginning. As this book begins, only hours have passed since the last story ended and now Evalle must face a powerful Tribunal of deities to account for her actions.

Her race, the Alterants, were already feared and reviled. But now several have shown themselves in beast form and killed. So when Evalle stands before the Tribunal to answer for herself, she finds herself judged for their misdeeds. Brina, the leader of the Beladors, stands up for her, but that can only take Evalle so far. In the end, she is charged with bringing in three Alterants known to be on the loose. If she can't do it, not only will they be sentenced to die, so will she.

On her mission, Evalle finds herself thrown back with Tristan, the Alterant she met in the last book. Storm, the jaguar-shifter is back too. His role as a protector and love interest is jacked up a notch. It's obvious he's falling hard for Evalle, but he has secrets he hasn't shared with her yet. And though Evalle is developing feelings for him, she has a lot to overcome, especially with her history of sexual assault.

The books in the Belador series are complicated. There are legions of characters, each with their own histories and agendas. This is not light reading... you have to pay attention. And even then, you may have work to keep up.

But if you can stay on top of it all, it's really good stuff. Evalle is a great character: fragile yet strong; both naive and jaded; afraid of love and still desperate for it. Storm is mysterious, sexy, powerful and loyal. The romance is gentle, but exciting. The action is non-stop... filled with strategies, machinations and violence. And when the book is done, you know the story is far from over. It's not really a cliff-hanger, but the stage is set for the next installment and I can't wait for it to get here. Really good stuff... but I would suggest reading Blood Trinity first, if you haven't already, or you may end up feeling lost. Almost 5 stars.

historical and practical

This book is in the public domain, so you can download it from several sites on the web. This book was first published in 1906, the printed version has 138 pages and has pictures in it, the e-book versions have no pictures. The book is easy to read and tells you about the history of different kind of fabrics, it also has chapters on more practical isues, such as: what kind of clothes are suitable for kids and how to take care of textiles. This practical part is dated but parts of it are still useful today. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in (cultural) history, fashion design, sewing or textiles.

For children's dresses, the pretty ginghams in small checks, chambray,
dimity, serge, flannels, cashmere are appropriate and serviceable.

In making up these simple materials nothing better can be suggested than
the plain, straight waist, fitting easily, to which a full skirt is
fastened. The sleeves may be of any fashion to add variety. Such a frock
is simple and dignified and has a certain archaic beauty and quaintness
that the huge, ugly collars and like ornament can never give.

And from the chapter on silks:

Many silks can be washed without injury to the fibers, but they cannot
be boiled without destroying the luster. Silks may be had in various
widths and endless variety of weaves. Many are reversible.
Silks are adulterated with cotton and ramie fibers. The chemicals used
in "loading" or "dynamiting" to give the weight lost by cleaning or
removing the gum from the raw silk give to the cheaper grades the
stiff, harsh feeling and cause the splitting and cracking of the silk,
hence the quality of the fiber should be considered when selecting a
silk, not the weight. Taffeta is often heavily loaded.

The position for hooks and eyes should be marked before sewing on. The
simplest, though least desirable, method of sewing-on these fastenings
is to place the eye at the edge of the seam or facing and the hook
sufficiently far back from the opposite side to give a lap. A much
preferable method is to baste a bias strip of crinoline along the
positions to be occupied by the hooks and eyes; this gives strength to
the finish. Sufficient material should be allowed for folding over the
shanks after the hooks and eyes have been sewed on, or they may be
covered with silk ribbon, slipping the edge under the beak of each hook
and then catstitched in position.

Historical lessons in dressmaking - good for reenactrs and serious seamstresses

This book was actually lessons about different fabrics and sewing of clothing including names/origins of fabrics, how-to, and tips and tricks of sewing. It was interesting to see that fabrics we have today of the same name are not always the same thing as some fabrics of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Excellent advice for making period clothing. There is also references to old books on fabric and dressmaking that could be a help for continued study on this subject in that time period. For someone interested in the domestic arts and culture of this time period, this book is an interesting read.

I thought this was a fun peak into a long gone age of handiwork. For anyone interested in the history of clothing or the history of women, because that's who clothed their families, I would recommend this.
