Great Kid's Book!

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a cute story. It shows kids what it's like to be greedy and grumpy, and that it is not fun to be like that and it doesn't pay to take things from other people if it is not yours. It also shows that when you work hard at something and share it with others, you will feel good about yourself. It helps kids realize the true meaning of love and that when your happy life is much more enjoyable. I think it's a great book for kids to learn from! I would recommend this book for your kids!!

The Grumpy Easter Bunny

ISBN 0816775907 - Printed in Singapore. "Publishers Weekly" Best-Seller. Easter is celebrated in a lot of different ways - Christian, pagan, and the "hey, free candy!" set. I am just not able to fit this book into ANY of those groups.

The bunnies spend all year making treats to hide for others on Easter, as the "messengers of Spring." Hopper doesn't see the value in that. What he sees is that he works hard and doesn't get to have the treats, so he takes them home and makes himself sick eating them. In the morning, Hopper finds a group of kittens who are willing to share the single treat they've found and between their example and his own stomachache, Hopper doesn't feel well at all. He feels even worse when Sir Byron, the Great Hare, asks him why he's neglected his job and then Sir Byron gives the kittens the chance to hide Hopper's treats as honorary Easter Bunnies. Hopper sees the wonder and joy of Easter morning firsthand and never again neglects his duties.

This is a fairly small book, a good size for tucking in your purse or diaper bag. The pages are sturdy board, which can take some rough handling, and they're glossy, so they wipe clean easily. The text, by Justine Korman, is too wordy for the usual board book audience of 0-3 year olds and the font is way too small for beginning readers. There isn't anything that I recognize as a particularly Easter message. Those are generally rebirth, renewal, new life - and none of those are here. At best, there's a message about being greedy versus sharing. Lucinda McQueen's illustrations are mostly pastel, the exceptions being the periodic red wheelbarrow and Sir Byron's red vest. This makes them, for me, very boring and not especially attractive. Not ugly, or bad, just boring.

It's easier to be a critic than an author; much easier in the case of "Dari Dictionary & Phrasebook." An internet search on "Nicholas Awad" introduces a true polyglot, from Hausa to Armenian, and it appears from the content of this work that Awad and his collaborators have a mastery of classical Persian -- and a very quirky understanding of Afghan Dari. It's an excellent phrase book, but many of the Dari terms used would raise eyebrows from Mazar to Kabul. If you don't mind occasionally being in the position of a guy walking into a biker bar and saying, "Ho, good innkeeper, willst thou draw me a draught of your finest ale?", this book provides an interesting, and indeed useful, introduction to Dari. Provided the barman gets beyond your initial, "Ho . . ." The pronounciations sometimes follow the Iranian more than the Afghan model, many of the words use the Iranian rather than the Afghan varient (q.y., beer, strawberry), many of the phrases are far more flowery than commonly used, and the pronunciation guide and the verb forms used -- well, an additional expression that could well have been used in the book is "be-resh" which literally means "beardless" but the metaphorical meaning transcends "campy." Go ahead and buy this book if you are heading toward Afghanistan; your ear will quickly atune you to the pronunciation and verb forms commonly used. Think of Dari as probably the easiest language for a native English speaker to learn, perhaps the second easiest after Malay, study the book, and be confident in your conversation with Afghans. Most of them are pretty forgiving in matters of language.

DOESN'T ACTUALLY HAVE DARI WORDS IN IT. This is JUST English transliteration, which makes correct pronunciation and actual learning very difficult. If you want to truly learn the language, this is not the book to get!

About the Author

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer with a background in information technology engineering. He has been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera. Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome (NAS) and delights in working with Nikonian's newest digital cameras. Living near Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. Thorough and Well Written

As usual, Darrell Young's "Mastering the..." books are well researched and written. I've had the D750 for several months now and his book is helping me learn new things about the camera that I hadn't discovered yet.
In order to avoid duplicating himself in multiple places in the book, he gives numerous references to other pages and chapters in the book that requires a certain amount of going back or forward in your reading to see what was being instructed. For that reason of going back/forth, it would be very hard for me personally to read this book in the e-book/Kindle format. That's why I purchased the hard copy.

A best buy for Nikon D750 users.

I love the Mastering the Nikon series books. They are very detailed in friendly, easy to understand language. This book contains a wealth of information, not just running through the camera's features (step-by-step), but the various camera options are laid out with great detail on how, when, and why you'd use whatever option. It's amazing how much information is packed in this book.

Another neat addition are the links offered for online downloadable resources/documents scattered throughout the book.

I have the paperback and the digital download as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone that owns a Nikon D750.

Excellent introduction to D750 camera settings for photographers new to digital photography

Very well written, organized, and illustrated book. Of the 566 pages the first 426 pages cover are for the most part a duplication of the Nikon user manual and what menu settings are available along with recaps of the settings the author uses personally. For someone whose first digital camera or first Nikon digital camera purchase in the past 8 years this is useful information.

As the recommendations are based on what the author shoots his preferences are naturally biased and there are not adequate explanations as to the pros and cons of each of the settings and this is important for the reader to decide which setting is best for what they plan to photograph. For example he states that he always uses matrix metering and this is not the best choice when photographing people that are back lit or scenes where there is a lot of sky as when using wide angle lenses or a zoom lens at its wide angle setting.

This also applies with his use of the auto shutter speed setting whereby the camera selects a minimum shutter speed based on the old rule of the reciprocal of the focal length of the lens. A third of the time this will be correct and the remainder of the time it will be too slow or too fast a shutter speed than is actually needed for the situation. With current cameras the resolution provided is greater than that of 35mm film and so camera or subject motion blur is more likely to be visible. It also is dependent on the skill of the photographer and how they hold the camera and release the shutter.

The author advises throughout the book that readers try different settings to see how they work. This is excellent advice. In particular as with the settings information there are gaps and inaccuracies. One example is the Auto EV setting that can enable users to change the EV with a command dial instead of using the EV button on the top of the camera. Not so simple as that actually as this setting only shows EV adjustment is being done and not whether the EV is positive or negative when looking through the viewfinder - unlike the change in the viewfinder display when using the EV button instead to make adjustments. This goes back to the lack of pros and cons to using different camera settings, some of which are minor and others that are major.

For experienced Nikon shooter who have a recently acquired a D750 camera there is little of value in the first 426 pages. For the inexperienced shooter there is a more user friendly guide than the Nikon manual but it can also mislead novices with its subjective recommendations on camera settings.

About the Author
Olly Richards speaks eight languages and is the man behind the popular blog: I Will Teach You A Language. He started learning his first foreign language at age 19, when he bought a one-way ticket to Paris to escape a painful breakup. With no exposure to languages growing up, and no special talent to speak of, he had to figure out how to learn a foreign language from scratch. An impressive reader for Italian learners

Writing a book of short stories for beginner or early-stage Italian learners is not an easy task. First of all, the Italian needs to be simplified so it is accessible to beginners, which involves both an astute choice of vocabulary, and a good understanding of grammatical challenges faced by learners at different levels. Most Italian readers shy away from the task of simplifying, and you end up with long, complex books that may be well-written, but are all but useless to people just starting out with the language, as they are far too overwhelming. The difficulty for authors is that in simplifying the language, the writing may lose points on literary style. So let's be clear... this book won't be winning any prizes for literature, but it is extremely effective for the purpose it sets out to achieve - stories for Italian learners that will get you reading, that you will be able to understand, and that will help you grow your vocabulary.

Secondly, you have to make the stories entertaining, so the reader actually wants to pick up the book and keep reading. Again not an easy task (most books fail badly on this point). In the introduction to the book, the author explains his rationale behind the creation of the stories, which (in a nutshell) is that the most important part of any book is that it is interesting enough for you to want to read it. If you are motivated to read, you will learn. Likewise, if the book is boring, you won't read it, and therefore won't learn anything, no matter how good the book is. So the success of this book of short stories should be judged primarily on the extent to which it captures your imagination and makes you want to read. With the exception of one story (which was rather far-fetched), I found all the stories in the book surprisingly entertaining, and I genuinely wanted to read to the end of them all.

So far, so good. If the author had simply written some entertaining stories in simple Italian and stopped there, that would already be a good achievement. However, what I liked most of all, and what ultimately makes this book so effective for Italian learners, is the inclusion of reading aids throughout the book. These aids do a fantastic job of helping the reader process the stories by explaining key vocabulary and checking understanding of the events in the plot - vital when you are not yet a confident reader, so that you do not get overwhelmed.

It is worth pointing out that the book is not really suitable for complete beginners (despite the title), as you will simply not have enough vocabulary to follow what is going on. There is also the occasional choice of words which is rather advanced for beginners' book, although the problem is not widespread. However, overall, I commend the author for producing a book which I believe will help many people get a start in reading Italian, and taking steps forward in the language. Highly recommended.

Ottimo! Great way to take your Italian to the next level

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in coming to grips with Italian in a fun, motivating way. What it does really well is to:
+ keep the vocabulary and grammar level both comprehensible and challenging for an advanced-beginner or intermediate learner of Italian;
+ provide opportunities to encounter vocabulary items more than once and in different contexts, which greatly increases the chance of actually learning them;
+ use vocabulary that is actually relevant and useful for someone learning Italian and who wants to be able to use that vocabulary in various social contexts.
In my experience, what's really interesting about this book is that you will probably not even realize how much Italian you have acquired through reading it until you go back to read it again or take up another book in Italian and can actually understand a lot more than you would have expected.

Amazing way to learn reading

This is an excellent resource for language learners who want to get started reading Italian (or the other languages it's available in). Olly's method for leading you through these short stories is extremely efficient and effective. It's exactly how I recommend my English students get started reading and the method I've used in my own learning, but Olly takes out all of the 'leg work'.
Usually while reading I would use a pencil and underline or write down words I don't know and then go through the hassle after of looking up the new vocabulary and trying to find the right definition. Olly not only gives you a glossary of the most challenging vocab in each chapter with the correct definition (so you don't even have to put down the book), but he also gives you summaries so you can check your comprehension. Usually, you'd need a teacher to help you with this, so these short stories just give you so much value!
I'm totally going to be using some of the other books for other languages I'm learning, hope it comes in Hebrew soon. Highly recommend!

The "religious plurality" of the second section includes those cults which are represented as demonic burlesques of the sacraments by Firmicus Maternus. The third reviews the changes, both within the church and in the public sphere, which were undeniably prompted by the accession of a Christian monarch. In this section on "Christian polyphony," Mark Edwards expertly moves on from this deliberate petrifaction of Judaism to the profound shift in relations between the church and the civic cult that followed the Emperor's choice of a new divine protector.

The material in the first section will be most familiar to the historian of philosophy, that of the second to the historian of religion, and that of the third to the theologian. All three sections make reference to such factors as the persecution under Diocletian, the so-called "edict of Milan,"the subsequent legislation of Constantine, and the summoning of the council of Nicaea. Edwards does not maintain, however, that the religious and philosophical innovations of this period were mere by-products of political revolution; indeed, he often highlights that Christianity was more revolutionary in its expectations than any sovereign could afford to be in his acts.This authoritative study provides a comprehensive reference work for those studying the ecclesiastical and theological developments and controversies of the fourth century.

Great story teaching life changing principles

Teaching fables, like this book, use a story to teach a lesson. Most that I've read (and I love to read them) have a thin plot carried by rich teaching points. A few have a decent story, but the teaching isn't particularly special or original. The rarest find is a clever story with deep, rich ideas.

This book is one of the rare finds--a great story (subtle, fast-paced, and realistic) with great ideas behind it (easy to understand and potentially life changing).

Note: I'm an author of fables (releasing my second this year) and have been a personal coach around life purpose for 12 years, so I have high standards. This is a phenomenal book for anyone looking to get clarity on which path to pursue.

The main character is college-aged, so it's easiest for similar-aged readers to relate and apply. But the ideas are rich enough that any age could have a breakthrough in the area of personal passions and purpose.

Great parental guide too!

As parents, we want what is best for our children. Often, we push hard for them to do more, be more. However, have you ever stopped to think that you may be pushing the wrong way? More than anything I would love for my children to find their path that is intended for them and for them to reach their ultimate potential and to truly be happy!

I think this is a must read for high school students but I also believe that this can be a great guide for parents of children any age. After reading this book, I find myself paying more attention to my boys and what makes them tick!

Very easy, enjoyable read and will now be my standard gift I give to graduating Seniors!

I have started to find my way at 52

Great book that was easy to read and yet had some profound messages and learning. My initial thought was that this might be a book that would be more useful to 20 something's that are just starting out in life. After reading it I have realized that it is mandatory reading for every parent that lost their way someplace sometime.
I particularly liked the way the story was told and how the key concepts were summarized at the end. While the story implies that finding one's way is easy and exciting, in real life it could be difficult and exhausting without a good mentor.
