So much more than just a sports book.
By Carroll B Ray
A wonderful coming-of-age story about growing up as a young boy, and learning lessons about family, friends and life. More than just a sports book, it's a reminder of better days when technology was not at the center of a child's world, and where every day was an adventure for a 12 year old boy. I highly recommend Knuckleball.

From Publishers Weekly
Given Trump's larger than life—and polarizing—public persona, part of Skipp Sudduth's achievement as narrator is his creation of a buffer zone of sorts. Granted, the entrepreneur does deliver a zealous introduction, but as Sudduth takes over, it becomes possible to overlook the positive and negative caricatures of Trump the celebrity and focus on his tangible no-nonsense advice. While viewers of The Apprentice will certainly recognize The Donald 's bravado in the recurring litany of accomplishments related to the global Trump brand, Sudduth's presentation of the career and personal growth tips will resonate with listeners. Trump Trumps Trump
By Dave Carpenter
I thought Donald Trump's last book was his best to date. In the same way that each of his buildings seems to trump his most recent, so too with this book. Trump has once again trumped Trump. This is his best book yet (why do I have a feeling that an even better book is already in process???).

This is an easy book for critics to dismiss as a celebrity fluff piece. But, the book really is far better than that. The fifty short essays, in and by themselves, are first rate commentary on important concepts for business and life. Taken together, the fifty essays provide a wonderful insight into the way Trump thinks and acts. And, gaining an insight into how Trump thinks and acts is worthwhile for he is world's pre-eminent master at personal brand building - a competency needed for almost every successful person.

Each of the fifty essays is well written, and each concept is illustrated by a short story to reinforce the point being made. The result is a book that almost invites speed reading...but I urge readers to slow down and really think through each of the fifty points being made. Even better yet, challenge yourself to grade yourself, as I have, on each of the fifty points. By grading yourself, I expect that you will gain new respect for Trump and new insights into just how brilliant Trump is.

Let's take the example of "You Can Better Your Best at Anytime." The fact that Donald Trump walks the talk with this mantra is readily apparent. Each of his buildings outdoes his previous best. As does each of his books. Etc. Etc. Prior to reading this book, that life philosophy was not woven into the fabric of my life. In a world where many guru's are preaching "good is good enough," Trump exhorts us to make our efforts a masterpiece. Now making everything a masterpiece could easily put someone into a state of frozen perfectionism, but Trump's philosophies also embrace a "get it done" style that is the antithesis to being frozen in perfectionism.

My greatest take-away from the book was one that came indirectly from the book. As I absorbed all that I was reading about Trump, the wisdom of Mike Robbin's terrific book Be Yourself, Everyone Else is Already Taken: Transform Your Life with the Power of Authenticity was heavy on my mind. Trump is the essence of the authenticity that Robbins suggests can be so powerful. As a result of these two books, I now see Trump as being bold, rather than just brash. A man who speaks his mind in a direct manner from which we can all learn. A man whose branding is based on the power of authenticity. And, a man whose real life gift is being a walking example of living an authentic life in an era where so many of our role models have been shown to be so lacking in authenticity.

Awesome book, especially for those who treat it like a classic and really, really reflect on the inner meaning of this collection of fifty thoughtful essays.

50 Motivating Essays from Donald Trump
By Alain B. Burrese
Love him or hate him, Donald Trump on many fronts has been extremely successful. While some say it's just because he got a good head start from his father, the truth is, Trump would not be where he's at, and would not have succeeded as he's done without many contributing factors. One such factor is his optimistic, positive charged, enthusiastic big thinking. If you want to model success, modeling the way Trump thinks is not a bad place to start. In his book "Think Like A Champion" written with Meredith McIver and starting with a Foreword by Robert Kiyosaki, Trump shares with readers what he calls an informal education in business and life. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the fifty essays in this book, and if you liked any of Trump's previous books, I'm sure you will really like this one.

The essays are mostly two to four pages long, with many being right around two and a half pages. So they are very easy to read. You could read the entire book through quickly, or just pick an essay or two a day. First, I found the essays very positive and uplifting. I think it would be difficult to read this book and not feel a bit motivated to pursue great accomplishments upon reading The Donald's advice and examples. However, I think the book goes beyond a motivational "vanity" piece. The essays really do have substance, and some very practical and sound advice on a variety of topics.

I also like that each essay has a quote at the heading. Trump mentions that he likes quotes, and so do I. The essay titled "Have the Right Mindset for the Job" has a quote by Henry Ford at the heading, "Don't find fault. Find a remedy." I'm using that quote in a conflict resolution program I'm teaching next week.

In one of the essays, Trump mentions how he likes to get right to the point. He does not have time for people that beat around the bush and don't succinctly tell him what they need. I felt he did the same with these essays. They are well written and make his point in just the right amount of space. Some of the fifty topics he covers include: Innovation, Strive for Wholeness, Wisdom, Think Like a Champion, Confronting Your Fears, Financial Literacy, Keep the Big Picture in Mind, Develop a Tempo When You're Working, Think Like a Genius, Set the Standard, and Building Your Reputation.

Again, I really enjoyed this book and felt Trump was writing thoughtfully and authentically. If you really think about what is contained in these essays and how you can apply the themes, strategies, and suggestions to your own life, I truly believe you will find they help you along your journey toward success. On top of that, they will motivate you to actually succeed in business and in life.

PJC Book Reviews
By Paul J. Christopher
The book keeps form with Mr. Trumps value for brevity in that it is concise, only 198 pages, but offers his valuable insight on an informal education on business and life from a seasoned entrepreneur.

Trump places a quote atop each chapter by such individuals as Albert Einstein, Aristotle, Henry Ford, Napoleon, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham Lincoln, Socrates, Henry David Thoreau, etc. Some of the author's suggestions that I found valuable include:

"Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success. - Henry Ford" (11).
"...a good way to handle difficult and even tragic times - to find blessing in the midst of adversity" (14).
"Never think of learning as being a burden or studying as being boring. It may require some discipline, but it can be an adventure" (17).
"The more you learn, the more you realize what you don't know" (35).
"As Jack Dempsey said, "A champion is someone who gets up when he can't" (39).
"I view my work as an art form" (43).
"Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world" - Ralph Waldo Emerson (51).
"Business is no place for stream of consciousness babbling, no matter how colorful you might think you are being. Whatever you're doing, keep it short, fast, and direct. (61)
"People appreciate brevity in today's world" (63).
"Don't find fault, find a remedy" - Henry Ford" (65).
"We are all businessmen and women, whether you see it that way yet or not. If you like art and can't make money at it, you eventually realize that everything is a business, even your art...I see my business as an art and so I work at it passionately." (86).
"Men are born to succeed, not fail. - Henry David Thoreau" (101).
"You can better your best at any time" (121).
"The important thing is not to stop questioning, curiosity has it's own reason for existing. - Albert Einstein" (131).
"Be sincere, be brief, be seated. - Franklin D. Roosevelt. Know your audience." (157).
"Build your reputation" (169).
"Diligence is the mother of good luck - Benjamin Franklin" (173).

The author guides the reader through a series of short and concise educational lessons that he has picked up along his business and life journey. Trump is a businessman but also an educator in this work, this book is a good resource for those wanting to advance themselves in business and life. It Has Its Moments
By Louis Mitas
This book is exactly what I was hoping for: A Doctor Who episode in book form. All the elements are there, you've got the Doctor, Rose, an alien planet with aliens... What more could I ask for? It's a super quick read. I read it in a day and I'm a slow reader. There is a rarely a slow moment in the novel.
However, all the plot twists are incredibly predictable. Many of them you can see coming from a long way off, but hey, I wasn't looking for plot twists, nor do I generally expect them in Doctor Who, so I have no real problem with this.
In fact, very little in the novel seemed unlike Doctor Who. The Doctor and Rose both stayed very true to the characters in the show. The only part which seemed the tiniest bit out of character for the Doctor was when he suggested he was greatly involved in a final edit of Hamlet. Considering he did meet Shakespeare the 2007 season and they clearly hadn't met before, this idea is a bit out of place, but with a time traveler it's not impossible. The only problem I had with this line was that in "The Shakespeare Code" the Doctor seems to have the greatest respect for Shakespeare and doesn't seem like he'd have ever edited anything the man wrote.
Other than this, there are moments while reading this when I burst out laughing for how true the Doctor was being to his character. All in all, it was a very entertaining tale.

Kind of a classic...
By Michael Valdivielso
The story is a mystery set on an alien planet. There is action, adventure, monsters, but not a lot of gore or violence. The Tenth Doctor is at his best when trying to solve the mystery, pulling all the clues together in one big pile and working on them till he gets an answer. Both Rose and the Doctor seem to be in character and the setting is interesting, along with a few of the ideas that make up the theme of the novel. The idea of a truly balanced planet, where everything in nature works together, is the main merit of this paradise. And its greatest danger.
A good travel book. Light, solid, worth a once over. Has the feeling of a young adult novel or a Doctor Who episode from the 60's and 70's.

Beautiful book
By Crusader70
Generation gaps are a fact of modern life, but nowhere have they been as wide or frequent as in China, where nearly every decade has seen Chinese society remade to an astonishing extent. One area in which these enormous political and social changes can be traced is in clothing: from dragon robes to cheongsams, Mao suits to Yves Saint Laurent, garments tell the story of China's modern history.

Valery Garrett, the author of eight previous books on the subject and a doyenne of the field, is well placed to trace that fascinating evolution. In Chinese Dress: From the Qing Dynasty to the Present, she has produced her magnum opus.

Qing dress was about rank and control: one could gauge exactly where a subject stood in the imperial, civil, military or social hierarchy by a quick and careful study of robe, hat and accessories (designer handbags not yet having been invented). A massive work of regulations and penalties on the subject was promulgated by the Qianlong Emperor to ensure that Manchu customs were not "subsumed and diluted by Chinese ways." Using the first of more than five hundred gorgeous, mostly colour, illustrations, Chinese Dress explains how to "read" such key exemplars of this system as embroidered "dragon robes" and "mandarin squares." A rich resource for the experienced scholar, these chapters will open the eyes of those new to the intricacies of imperial dress in a way akin to first learning characters.

With much talk of cuffs and vamps and hems, a book so specialized runs the risk of glazing the eyes of the sartorially clueless, but the veteran author wisely spices the narrative with both the Chinese history needed to place the fashions in context and many interesting asides. Thus the perennially fascinating practice of footbinding is explored in every disturbing detail: braided ankle covers, hidden heel supports and puttees just part of the paraphernalia required.

The focus of Chinese Dress, however, and where it breaks new ground, is 20th-century fashion and the dramatic political and social changes that shaped its evolution. This second half of the book draws on the author's explorations in '70 and `80s New Territories Hong Kong, and her interest in the dress and culture of ordinary people; the garments and accessories collected during these efforts now reside at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

A short review can only hint at the contents of Chinese Dress. Wedding, military and peasant attire, hats, shoes, jewelry and accessories are all discussed and illustrated in sumptuous detail. Children's wear, with its focus on "locking the child to the earth" and protecting him (too rarely her) from theft by evil spirits is particularly fascinating: so too the culture's elaborate funerary practices.

Chinese Dress is a beautifully presented and accessible work of scholarship that retells the remarkable story of China's modern transformation from a unique perspective.

The Beast in the Jungle (Xist Classics), by Henry James

Henry James’ Greatest Short Fiction Achievement

“What had the man had, to make him by the loss of it so bleed and yet live? Something—and this reached him with a pang—that he, John Marcher, hadn’t; the proof of which was precisely John Marcher’s arid end. No passion had ever touched him, for this was what passion meant; he had survived and maundered and pined, but where had been his deep ravage?... The escape would have been to love her; then, then he would have lived. ” - Henry James, The Beast in the Jungle and Other Stories

Like a beast in the jungle, protagonist John Marcher waits for some catastrophic event to happen letting life and love pass by. Eventually, he discovers that tragedy has already occurred: nobody can give his wasted time back. The other two stories, ‘The Jolly Corner’ and ‘The Altar of the Dead’ are another great examples of Henry James’ wonderful craft and knowledge of the human soul.

Review
Short story by Henry James that first appeared in The Better Sort (1903). Despite its sluggish pace, implausible dialogue, and excessively ornate style, it is a suspenseful story of despair, with powerful images of fire, ice, and hunting. The Beast in the Jungle concerns John Marcher, a neurotic egoist obsessed with the lurking feeling that something incredible is to happen to him. This impending fate has a predatory quality, like "a crouching beast in the jungle." Consumed with anticipation and dread, Marcher is unable to reciprocate the love of his long-suffering companion, May Bartram. She comes to see his fate but is unable to make him understand it before she dies. While visiting her grave one year later, Marcher suddenly realizes that his terrible fate was precisely his inability to comprehend her love for him. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

From the Back Cover
James's subtle mastery of the art of fiction is nowhere more evident than in "The Beast in the Jungle," regarded by many as his greatest achievement in short fiction, a gripping portrait of a man alienated from life and love. The author's uncanny ability to communicate the inner lives of his characters is also richly evident in "The Jolly Corner" and "The Altar of the Dead," two superbly crafted tales that explore the complex interlacings of loss, love, and the ever-present past in the lives of their protagonists. Note. Original Dover (1993) selection of three stories reprinted unabridged from Vol. 17 of the New York Edition of Henry James's works published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1909.

An engrossing tale
By J. Mullin
Henry James' Beast in the Jungle is surely not for everyone, there is little action in the novella (I suppose that is the point actually) and the title could give readers the wrong idea. John Marcher, the protagonist, is re-aquainted with May Bartram, a woman he knew ten years earlier, who remembers his odd secret- Marcher is seized with the belief that his life is to be defined by some catastrophic or spectacular event, lying in wait for him like a "beast in the jungle."
May decides to take a flat nearby in London, and to spend her days with Marcher curiously awaiting what fate has in stall for John. Of course Marcher is a self-centered egoist, believing that he is precluded from marrying so that he does not subject his wife to his "spectacular fate". So he takes May to the theatre and invites her to an occasional dinner, while not allowing her to really get close to him for her own sake. As he sits idly by and allows the best years of his life to pass, he takes May down as well, until the denouement wherein he learns that the great misfortune of his life was to throw it away, and to ignore the love of a good woman, based upon his preposterous sense of foreboding.
James' language can be a bit stilted at times, and some of the dialogue may strike modern readers as out-dated. However James was a master of the novella format, and with The Beast in the Jungle he has written an engrossing psychological drama, which left me speechless at the very end. Pick up a collection that also includes The Turn of the Screw and Daisy Miller if you haven't already read them, they are accessible (more so than some of James' full length novels) and great examples of the format's potential.

A glimpse into the soul
By A Customer
Henry James has always been one of my favorite writers even though many readers are put off by his very stylized writing. When I first read "The Beast in the Jungle", I must admit that I was completely blown away by its powerful message. This is a type of mystery that never loses its power although you already know the ending. There is no way to describe certain moments in the story that give us a glimpse into the very soul of these characters that manage to become real to us throughout this story. Marcher's incredible egotism blinds him from seeing the truth in his life and thereby destroying not only his own life, but also destroying the life of the woman who could have helped him learn how to live before it was too late. Henry James was a master writer and to quote the words of T.S. Eliot: "Henry James is a difficult writer for English readers because he is American, difficult for Americans because he is European, and I ignore if he is possible for other readers." Yes, Henry James can be a challenge for many readers, but the reward is all worth the effort.

This Beast Stalks You
By Alan Nelson, No Chance Meetings Books & Odd Bits (nelson@sicembears.com)
The story that lurks in this ornate writing from another, more embellished time will seize you with its power. And this story is not for the weak minded or those whose spirits shatter at the slightest confrontation. You, like John Marcher, will have the uncomfortable feeling that something Terrible, & Permanent is going to happen to you from reading this story. And you're right, but you don't know how right. The fate is something far worse than you think. Don't find yourself in a graveyard weeping over your May. You've been warned. This story is not dead paper and ink, or electrons over the internet. It waits for You to Enter The Jungle. And it is far better for some not to enter this Jungle, and be awakened to the Beast that even now watches you and prepares to leap.

The Establishment Clause: Religion and the First Amendment, by Leonard W. Levy

Leonard Levy's classic work examines the circumstances that led to the writing of the establishment clause of the First Amendment: 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. . . .' He argues that, contrary to popular belief, the framers of the Constitution intended to prohibit government aid to religion even on an impartial basis. He thus refutes the view of 'nonpreferentialists,' who interpret the clause as allowing such aid provided that the assistance is not restricted to a preferred church.

For this new edition, Levy has added to his original arguments and incorporated much new material, including an analysis of Jefferson's ideas on the relationship between church and state and a discussion of the establishment clause cases brought before the Supreme Court since the book was originally published in 1986.

From Library Journal
Like Levy's earlier work, this new book on the establishment clause of the First Amendment is exhaustively researched, forcefully and relentlessly argued. It traces the sources of disestablishment in the colonial experience, offers exegetical commentary on the relevant discussion at the constitutional convention and in the ratification contests, and insistently concludes that Congress, in writing the religious freedom clause, took the broad view, flatly prohibiting government support to religion in generali.e., to all denominations, without discrimination. Opponents argue that the Framers did not intend to forbid aid to all denominations on a nondiscriminatory basis. Levy takes on McCloskey, Corwin, Justices White, Burger, Rehnquist, the Attorney General, the President himself. It is no contest. The argument for absolute disestablishment has been made, once and for all. Milton Cantor, History Dept., Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst

Church versus State
By Gerard D. Launay
The confrontation between religious and secular values is one of the hottest issues that will confront the Supreme Court in the twenty-first century. Surprisingly, few Americans are schooled in the origins of the First Amendment and the thinking of James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and other founding founders in including this clause as part of the Bill of Rights. A good portion of the volume discusses this extremely relevant topic. We learn that Madison was instrumental in the passage of the Establishment Clause. He saw it as a limitation on the power of Congress to coerce individuals to worship God in any manner inconsistent with their conscience, indeed to enact any law that involved religious topics.

The book continues its discussion of efforts to promote prayer and religious doctrine through government backing by examining leading 19th and 20th century Supreme Court cases. I learned that the celebrated liberal Justice William O. Douglas wrote opinions that weakened the wall of separation; he authored conservative decisions that called for the encouragement of religion by the state...(I expected the opposite). Every informed citizen probably should read this book to discover why the establishment clause is an essential pillar of American liberty.

Leaks in the Church/State Wall Are OK?
By Jonathan L. Widger
With attempts by our current President to allow federal funds to go to religious charities, a better understanding of the history and meaning of the First Amendment is desparately needed. One could hardly be better qualified to give us such an education than Leonard W. Levy in his book on the Establishment Clause.
In his book, Levy refutes the nonpreferentialists' claim that the First Amendment clause, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," merely prohibits Congress from providing preferential aid to one church. If "an establishment of religion" meant only single-church establishments, Congress would only be prohibited from exclusively benefiting one church but not prohibited from aiding religion impartially. But, as Levy points out, history does not support the nonpreferentialists' interpretation.
Although the five southern colonies did have exclusive Anglical establishments, the colonies of New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire came to have multiple religious establishments, and, indeed, the colonies of Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey never had establishments of any kind. After the Revolution, opposition to establishments increased, resulting in states having to replace their exclusive or dual establishments or even ending their establishments altogether. Thus, the historical fact of multiple establishments of religion contradicts the nonpreferentialists' interpretation that "an establishment of religion" referred only to single-church establishments, and, therefore, does not support their claim that the establishment clause only prohibits Congress from making laws preferring one church. Nor is their interpretation supported by the debates between the Federalists and Anti-federalists.
Anti-federalists feared loss of liberty and pressured Federalists to accept recommendations for amendments to the new Constitution, which included protection of religious liberty. But Federalists countered that such amendments were superfluous because, as Levy succinctly restates the argument, "[T]he unamended Constitution vests no power over religion." Moreover, Madison stated in an October 17, 1788 letter to Jefferson that these amendments ought to be "so framed as not to imply powers not meant to be included in the enumeration." Thus, Levy concludes, "To argue, as the nonpreferentialists do, that the establishment clause should be construed to permit nondiscriminatory aid to religion leads to the impossible conclusion that the First Amendment added to the powers of Congress even though it was framed to restrict Congress. It is not only an impossible conclusion; it is ridiculous."
From his demolition of the nonpreferentialists' interpretation of the establishment clause and his statement in the Preface that his "sympathies are clearly with the separationists," one might conclude that Levy is a strict advocate of an impregnable wall of separation between church and state. However, he is not. Of zealous separationists who interpret every crack in the wall as disaster, Levy says, "[They are] like Chicken Little, screaming, 'The wall is falling, the wall is falling.' It really is not and will not, so long as it leaks just a little at the seams. If it did not leak a little, pressure on the wall might generate enough force to break it."
Examples of leaks which Levy feels need not be repaired are the Supreme Court beginning its sessions with "God save this honorable Court," the money motto "In God We Trust," the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, tax-supported chaplains for military and legislative bodies, etc. Although Levy is aware of the concern of separationists that "big oaks grow from small acorns," he invokes for "trivial" leaks an aphorism which was also advocated by Madison: "De minimis non curat lex" ("The law does not bother with trifles"). A more controversial leak, however, is Levy's advocacy of tax aid for parochial schools.
Although he agrees that the "claim of 'double taxation' is a misnomer," he asserts that the Supreme Court "ought to relieve the burden of so called double taxation on those who pay to send their children to private school." He also says, "If proper restraints exist on the funds for parochial schools so that tax monies are not spent for religious purposes, and the aid rendered is comparable to the value of the secular education provided by the schools, fairness seems to be on the accomodationist side." To say the least, Levy's leaky wall is problematic. It is impossible that parochial school aid would not set free additional dollars for sectarian indoctrination, and the idea that, with "proper restraints," taxpayers' dollars could be secure from misuse is too good to be true.
In the course of discussing establishment-clause cases, Levy amuses his reader with some pot shots at the High Court. He says, for example, that "the Court has managed to unite those who stand at polar opposites on the results that the Court reaches: a strict separationist and zealous accommodationist are likely to agree that the Supreme Court would not recognize an establishment of religion if it took life and bit the Justices."
Levy obviously writes with passion, and his scholarship is as good as his views are controversial. Notwithstanding my disagreement with him over parochial school aid, I found his book both provoking and educational.

Argued Strongly and Successfully
By R. Albin
This is a relatively short book by the noted legal historian and constitutional scholar Leonard Levy. Somewhat polemical in nature, this book is concerned primarily with rebutting the 'original intention' approach to the establishment clause of the First Amendment. Written originally in response to Reagan era claims that the establishment clause permitted non-preferential aid to religion, this book maintains its relevance as this claims continue to be made by a variety of conservative politicians and legal theorists. The non-preferentialist approach states that the establishment clause authorizes federal aid to religion so long as it is not preferential and specifically avoids a single church. The opposite, separationist approach, advocates the so-called "wall" between church and state with the federal government prohibited from aiding religion. Levy systemically examines the nature of religous establishments at the time of the formulation of the constitution, the attitudes of the Framers towards separation, the rationale for seperation, and the basic logic of the Bill of Rights (a subject on which Levy is an established authority). The result is a devastating critique of non-preferentialism based on original intent. Levy shows well that religous establishments in several colonies/states were plural in nature, so establishment can't refer just to favoring one religion. In line with a great deal of other scholarship, he shows that the framers were definitely separationist in orientation. With other scholars, Levy stresses that separationism was advocated by a coaltion of relatively secular intellectuals like Madison and Jefferson and a group of devout churchmen like the Baptists Isaac Backus and John Leland, all of whom felt that separation was necessary to safeguard religion. Finally, he scornfully but correctly exposes the basic weakness of arguing that the establishment clause authorizes non-preferential aid by pointing out that the basic thrust of the Bill of Rights is to constrain Federal power, not to enumerate its powers. Levy's arguments are presented well and are convincing. While non-preferentialism may one day be a viable policy, its advocates will have to search elsewhere for a constitutional justification.

The last couple of chapters of the book are devoted to related topics. Levy has an effective chapter on the inconsistencies of Supreme Court rulings on the establishment clause. He characterizes well the confusion engendered by these often unclear rulings and makes a very good point that the contradictory rulings and often poorly argued decisions are contributing factors to social discord on this issue. Part of this chapter, however, is a bit confusing because Levy wanders into a general discussion of originalist interpretation. This prefigures one of his later books but is not strictly germane to the topic of this book.

Levy also has some interesting comments on his attitude towards separation. While the logic of his arguments leads to strict separationism, he reveals himself to be a modest accomodationist with considerable respect for religion and its important place in American life.

Praise for Enterprise Patterns and MDA

“I’ve never seen a system of business patterns as detailed as this one. The completeness that Arlow and Neustadt provide in these patterns is impressive. The explanations for why the patterns are formed the way they are and how they’re interconnected are incredibly thorough. The patterns presented here have the potential to impact business applications in the same way the ‘Gang of Four’ patterns have impacted general software development.”

             Chief Engineer of Product Innovation
              IONA Technologies

“Enterprise Patterns and MDA is a detailed, yet very readable, guide to designing business applications using reusable model components and Model Driven Architecture. It deserves a place on every application designer’s desk.”

         —Andrew Watson
             Vice President and Technical Director
             Object Management Group, Inc.

“Design patterns are generally acknowledged as an effective approach to developing robust and highly reusable software. Now that Model Driven Architecture is raising software design to ever-higher levels of abstraction, it is only natural that pattern concepts should find application in advanced modeling techniques. With this book, Arlow and Neustadt have greatly advanced the state of the art of MDA by defining both a theory and a methodology for applying the concept of Archetype Patterns to business software modeling.”

This book is a practical guide to applying Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and patterns in order to create business applications more easily. It provides you with a proven catalog of archetype patterns: high-value model components that can be easily incorporated into Unified Modeling Language (UML) models. Each archetype pattern allows you to understand and model a specific part of an enterprise system.

Enterprise Patterns and MDA teaches you how to customize any archetype pattern—such as Customer, Product, and Order—to reflect the idiosyncrasies of your own business environment. Because all the patterns work harmoniously together and have clearly documented relationships to each other, you’ll come away with a host of reusable solutions to common problems in business-software design.

This book shows you how using a pattern or a fragment of a pattern can save you months of work and help you avoid costly errors. You’ll also discover how—when used in literate modeling—patterns can solve the difficult challenge of communicating UML models to broad audiences.

The configurable patterns can be used manually to create executable code. However, the authors draw on their extensive experience to show you how to tap the significant power of MDA and UML for maximum automation. Not surprisingly, the patterns included in this book are highly valuable; a blue-chip company recently valued a similar, but less mature, set of patterns at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Use this practical guide to increase the efficiency of your designs and to create robust business applications that can be applied immediately in a business setting.

About This Book

This is a practical book that we hope will save you a great deal of time and effort in your software development projects. It gives you a set of archetype patterns and the theory you need to use them effectively. We’re planning to publish some more volumes of archetype patterns over the next few years, and because this book is the first volume, it sets the theoretical groundwork for future work on archetypes.

Archetype patterns are high-value model components that you can easily use in your own UML models. Each archetype pattern provides a solution for understanding and modeling a specific part of a business system. These patterns are valuable—a similar, but much less mature, set of patterns was recently independently valued at about $300,000 by a blue chip company. Using any one of these patterns, or even a pattern fragment, may save you many days or months of work. Even more important than this saving is the fact that each archetype pattern may prevent you from making expensive mistakes! All of the patterns presented in this volume work together harmoniously and so provide a unified pattern language for talking about selling systems. This harmony greatly adds to their value.

We think that in the year 2003, we are at the start of a revolution in software development. Much as the 1990s saw an increase in the level of abstraction from procedural to object-oriented code, we believe that this decade will see a further, and more significant, increase in the level of abstraction. This will be a change from code-centric software development to model-centric software development through the OMG’s Model Driven Architecture (MDA) initiative. We hope that the concepts, techniques, tools and patterns that we describe in this book will help us all to make this revolution in software development a reality.

Our Vision

One of the reasons this book came about was through boredom! After modeling for many years, we decided that we were often just doing the same old thing over and over again. At their most abstract levels, most businesses seem to be made up of the same semantic elements—Customer, Product, Order, Party, etc. In fact, so pervasive are some of these elements, that it led us to the notion of business archetype patterns. We speculated that most business systems could be assembled, like Lego bricks, from a sufficiently complete set of archetype patterns.

The essence of our vision is that archetype patterns should be treated as a type of “model component” that can be taken off the shelf, customized and instantiated in your own models. This process can be done manually, but ideally should be automated to as high a degree as possible, by using an MDA (Model Driven Architecture) tool.

Today, you can use a GUI builder to create graphical user interfaces rapidly from GUI components. The work we describe in Chapter 2 enables you to construct semantically correct and verifiable UML models rapidly from platform independent, generic, model components with a high degree of automation. We believe that this may be the future of software development. We call this “component based modeling.”

This is reuse writ large—software systems are not considered to be composed of reusable classes, reusable code components, or even reusable subsystems, but rather from the reusable semantic elements that we call archetype patterns. In fact, to a great extent the essence of the business system lies in its archetypes and their patterns, rather than in any code or design artifacts. Coding practices, design practices and even architectures come and go with technology changes, but the archetypes survive, largely unchanged, sometimes over millennia.

Why We Haven’t Done It Sooner

We have wanted to write this book for several years but there have been obstacles that we have only recently overcome. These obstacles were:

  • The state of the art of UML modeling. Until the OMG’s recent Model Driven Architecture initiative, we have not really had the conceptual tools necessary to describe archetype patterns in good form.
  • The problem of pattern variation—business patterns often need to adapt their form to a specific business context. We have now formulated a simple solution to this problem that allows us to create archetype patterns that are adaptable to different business environments.
  • The problem of communicating UML models to a wide audience. In fact, we’ve had a good solution to this for a few years now, in the form of literate modeling (described in Chapter 3).
  • UML modeling tool support. It’s all very well presenting a theory of archetype patterns, but such a theory is useful to the average software engineer only if it can be put into practice. Modeling tools have recently come on to the market that can accommodate our requirements for archetype pattern automation.

The Structure of This Book

There are four main threads to this book:

  • The theory of archetypes and archetype patterns (Chapters 1 and 2)
  • Pattern automation using Model Driven Architecture (Chapter 2)
  • Increasing the business value of UML models by making them accessible to a wide audience through literate modeling (Chapter 3)
  • A valuable pattern catalog that you can use in your own models (Chapter 4 onward)
  • Chapters 1, 2 and 3 provide you with the theoretical basis for the rest of the book, and you will find that they cover a lot of new material. In Chapter 1 we describe a new approach to dealing with the problem of pattern variation—how to adapt patterns for different usage contexts. In Chapter 2 we show you how you can automate the process of using archetype patterns using an MDA-enabled UML modeling tool. The first two Chapters are intimately related. The pattern automation described in Chapter 2 depends on the theory of archetypes and archetype patterns presented in Chapter 1. Chapter 3 describes the technique of literate modeling that you can use to document your patterns. This chapter is pretty much self-contained. Literate modeling is a powerful way of communicating UML models to a wide audience.

Each of the first three chapters contains a summary that reiterates the key information in the chapter in a very concise outline form. This is great for revision and it is also a useful source of bullet points for presentations.

The pattern catalog can stand alone. If you choose to use the book primarily as a pattern catalog (Chapter 4 through Chapter 12), then you can skip much of the theoretical background in the first three chapters. Use the pattern catalog as a valuable resource for your own models. Each of the pattern chapters ends with a very brief summary that lists the key concepts and archetypes introduced in that chapter. Again, we do this in outline form.

Having said that the pattern catalog can stand alone, we believe that you will be able to apply the patterns much more effectively if you have at least a basic understanding of archetype theory first. You can find all you need to know in Chapter 1. All the patterns in the in the pattern catalog are a direct result of the application of the theories and techniques described in the first three chapters. The notions of archetypes, archetype patterns, pattern configuration and literate modeling have allowed us to create much more complete and robust patterns than would otherwise have been possible. Finally, we provide a glossary of archetypes, a bibliography and a complete index.

    Valuable in many ways.
    By wiredweird
Nominally, this book presents "archetype patterns", using UML and an extended case study. The archetype idea, intermediate between a general design pattern and a specific application, is a valuable one. In the case study, it's a set of business meta-objects, operations, and organizing principles. In presenting the archetype abstraction, those objects are spelled out in enough detail to create a useable framework for routine business needs.

The archetype mechanism is also spelled out in great detail, almost wholly within the UML framework. By itself, this won't be enough to convince any UML doubters about UML's flexibility. Taken as one among many UML applications, however, it's very compelling. It's also the first reference I know that gets down to cases in applying MDA - an interesting view. I fault the technique for only two things. First is a slight dependence on a specific CASEproduct, ArcStyler. That reliance never turned all the way into an advertisement, so I'll let it pass. Second is a baffling section on "rules." The rules and rule mechanisms make sense, but inexplicably seem to re-create the features of the OCL.

Two extras make this presentation very attractive. First is the mention of "literate programming," tying the UML tool suite to user documentation and design documentation. They specifically note XML and DocBook, existing standards, as the vehicle for integrating prose and technical parts of the model. Bravo! Even if their LP tools are weak, use of the idea is a real strength. The second extra is a pervasive awareness of standards. Money is phrased in terms of ISO 4217, nations in terms of ISO 3166, books in terms of ISBNs (ISO 2108), and on and on. Far too few programmers realize how many of their software requirements are already spelled out in external standardslike these, so the consciousness-raising exercise is a good one.

This is an excellent resource, not just for its business objects and not just for its UML case study. The author treat even personal names (table 4.4) with more care than I've seen anywhere else - that care pervades the whole book, and is a lesson in itself.

Great practical material instead of esoteric theory...
    By Thomas Duff
Over the last month or so, I've been reading Enterprise Patterns And MDA - Building Better Software With Archetype Patterns And UML by Jim Arlow and Ila Newstadt (Addison-Wesley). This is another one of those books that I thought would deliver one thing and instead produced much more than I expected.
Chapter breakdown: Archetypes and Archetype Patterns; Model Driven Architecture with Archetype Patterns; Literate Modeling; Party Archtype Pattern; PartyRelationship Patter; Customer Relationship Management Pattern; Product Pattern; Inventory Pattern; Order Pattern; Quantity Pattern; Money Pattern; Rule Pattern; Summary; Archetype Glossary; Bibliography; Index
Now, when I requested this for review, I was expecting something in terms of programming patterns and technical material. What I got was a great business tool for modeling typical business objects and transactions. The authors take a business concept like Inventory, and they build a model around it. The model is an archetype, or a entity that exists in some shape in every business. Through UML diagrams, you'll see all the parts that make up the archetype and how to take the parts you need to build your own version of the entity. While the Inventory model is very comprehensive in the book, you can also pull the pieces you need to model the reality that exists in your own business.
There's some very practical benefits you can gain from this book. If you're building an application and need to track a customer (for example), you can turn to the Party model and see all the parts that make up that type of entity. This will help you to understand all the data elements that make up a Party, such as address (web, email, telephone, geographic), organization, person/gender/ethnicity, relationship, etc. These are elements you might think of and/or remember to include, but having the model there helps you get it right early on.
If you're a business analyst, you will really get your value from this book. And if you're a developer who also has to design the systems, you'll look like a wizard when you complete a solid design with features the customer didn't even realize they needed.

    Nice resource on your bookshelf
    By Lasse Koskela
"Enterprise Patterns and MDA" is not an MDA book. In fact, the most significant focus of the book is actually patterns, specifically business patterns and archetypes.
The authors start the journey by introducing concepts and techniques such as archetypes (universal, recurring "things") and archetype patterns, and Model Driven Architecture. Furthermore, the authors have dedicated one chapter for describing a technique called Literate modeling (combining traditional visual modeling with an accessible business context provided via a narrative text, for example).
Up to this point (vicinity of page 116), the authors' writing style has been flawless, in my opinion, and easy to read. From chapter 4 onwards, the authors have provided a huge pattern catalog for archetype patterns. The catalog has been divided into chapters around archetypes such as Party, Order, Customer, and so on. Each archetype pattern introduces a business context, a high-level overview model, and descriptions of the related archetypes, their properties and related activities.
I didn't go through even nearly all patterns in the catalog. However, I feel confident that I will dive into the catalog looking for insight when moving to a new problem domain on a new project. Enterprise Patterns and MDA is a nice resource to have on your bookshelf.
