In honor of the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald, an event given lasting fame by singer Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Schumacher recreates both the ship's final trip and the controversies that later eddied about the wreck's cause and the ultimate disposition of ship relics. Schumacher, biographer of Eric Clapton, Francis Ford Coppola and Allen Ginsberg, has also produced 25 documentaries about Great Lakes shipwrecks—an indication of his passion. Even as he dissects the rancorous disputes that arose among family members of the dead, historians and others seeking to either memorialize or exploit the shipwreck, Schumacher never fails to bring a sympathetic and knowledgeable view of the story, as well as great respect to the memory of the 29 crew members who died. Although some of the literary devices he employs are formulaic—the high school student being called from class to learn of the death of her father, for example—Schumacher, aided by his encyclopedic knowledge of Great Lakes shipwrecks and his abiding interest in telling an accurate, unsensationalized story makes them work in a rewarding narrative. Schumacher has previously written about popular music, which, given that his subject here owes its fame to a hit Gordon Lightfoot song, seems entirely appropriate. Schumacher chronicles theEdmund Fitzgerald from its 1958 launching as the largest freighter on the Great Lakes to its 1975 sinking, memorialized by the song. He emphasizes that while the sinking was sudden, the freighter had already severely flooded, and the real mystery is the cause of the flooding. He canvases various possibilities (faulty maintenance, leaking hatchways, etc.) in detail, with clarity and sobriety. He does as much, too, in portraits of the crew, assessing the possibility of human error without gratuitous finger-pointing, and he includes moving portraits of the crew's families. Finally, he gives a balanced account of the subsequent discovery and exploration of the wreck, some of which has been so competitive and in such dubious taste that the wreck has been declared a gravesite to which further diving is barred. A thoroughly admirable addition to Great Lakes and general maritime history. Roland Green

Superb reportage and history

Michael Schumacher is a gem. His writing style is economical, but hardly dry. His prodigous research of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, a Great Lakes ore carrier that sank in a 1975 Lake Superior storm, shows in a detailed recitation of the ship, its building, crew, the dramatic power of lake storms, the sinking and its aftermath.

Like many people, my interest in the Fitzgerald was minimal: faint recollections of the news stories of the time and Gordon Lightfoot's ballad. Yes, when I saw the title, I thought Schumacher's book would be worth the read.

Schumacher, without ever appearing to do so, begins with dramatic flourish and keeps right on building through the very last page. He never engages in histrionic trickery. Never stoops to sensationalism of any kind. Never inserts his own opinions. He employs his skill as a writer to present the facts in a very spare way to heighten the drama. Schumacher is indeed brilliant: like the mason, he lays one unimposing brick of fact upon another until one at last sees not the individual bricks, but a stunning cathedral.

"Mighty Fitz" is an education in and of itself about Great Lakes shipping, the giant ore carriers that routinely ply their way across the waters, the frightening stormse that can roil the lakes, the men who crew these vessels and much more, including the opportunists who take advantage of tragedy to make a buck. The list is much longer, a testament to Schumacher's research and writing skills. Really, quite an extraordinary work and one well worth reading.

Fascinating, Modern-Day Mystery

I was a teenager growing up in Northern Minnesota in November 1975 when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in eastern Lake Superior. I remember the storm, the news story, and thought the Gordon Lightfoot song only added to the mystical element of why the storm claimed the "pride of the lakes."

Schumacher's account is basically chronological, tracing the launching of the ship in 1958 and following its life until the boat last loaded taconite pellets in Superior, Wisconsin on the morning of November 9, 1975. Accounts and reflections of family members are interspersed throughout the narrative.

Of particular interest to me are the various theories of how she sank so suddenly. There were no survivors, no visual witnesses. The best evidence of what happened were radio conversations with nearby ships.

I had always favored the theory that the ship might have struck a shoal north of Caribou Island. With both radars down, the Fitzgerald had to thread a needle between two islands. Under most circumstances, this would be no problem. But in the early afternoon of November 10, 1975 in a blinding snowstorm, maybe she got too close to the more shallow shore on the north side of the island. With a hole in the bottom, that would account for the list the Captain reported. The ship gradually sank lower and lower in the water until a wave from behind lifted her and sent her nosediving to the bottom of the lake. This theory seems to best explain why there was no final distress call.

However, after reading Schumacher's book, I am less certain. The Coast Guard's original explanation of taking on water from the topside hatches now has some merit to me. This theory has always been controversial because it then points to possible negligence of the crew in not manually securing dozens of clamps that hold the hatch covers in place. Schumacher also reported something that I never heard before in that the Coast Guard found some damage to the hatch covers just a couple of weeks prior the accident, but cleared the Fitzgerald for the remaining of the shipping season.

Maybe both things happened. Who knows? What we do know from the radio transmission is that the Fitzgerald was taking on water from somewhere and it gradually weighed the ship down until it either just sank or nosedived to the bottom.

Less convincing is the theory that she broke in two on the surface before sinking. How the Fitzgerald sits in two pieces at the bottom of the lake 530 feet down seems to support the theory that she nosedived with the bow hitting the bottom violently from the shifting weight of the iron ore. The bow is sitting battered but dignified facing southeast towards the safety of Whitefish Bay. The torque created in the middle of the ship upon impact twisted the stern so that it now rests upside down some few hundred feet away from the bow.

No one will ever know with certainty. What has always fascinated me about the Fitzgerald is how violent and fickle Lake Superior can be. The other thought I have is what the 29 men thought in those precious few seconds they had when they knew they were about to die. I wonder what I would have thought and done in a similar circumstance. Gordon Lightfoot captures the sentiment so well in his line, "Does anyone know, where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"

The book is very readable and I couldn't put it down. Also of note are recent developments in which there is a movement on the part of the families to declare the site as a graveyard and off-limits to all future dives. I completely agree. A survey has been made. There are no definitive clues because the impact on the bottom has caused so much damage there is no way to determine what damage happened above or below water. There is no way to determine whether there is a hole under the bow section that may have caused the flooding in the first place.

It will be impossible to forget the Fitzgerald and we should not. But at the very least, we should let the 29 dead men at the bottom of the lake rest in peace by prohibiting all future dives. Schumacher's book is an moving compilation of 30 years of theories and shed tears over this modern day mystery.

People are still very interested some three decades later.

"Mighty Fitz" arrived on the shelves of our local library in early December. It has already been checked out 9 or 10 times indicating to me that there is still a remarkable level of interest in trying to ascertain just what happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald on that stormy November day three decades ago. Unlike some of the other reviewers I had not read anything about the Fitz prior to this. I must admit that at times I was absolutely spellbound by author Michael Schumacher's chilling account of the demise of this formidable vessel.

For those unfamiliar with the history of Great Lakes shipwrecks "Mighty Fitz" offers a crash course on the subject. Michael Schumacher has devoted much of his adult life to studying these wrecks. You will discover the circumstances surrounding the sinkings of the Carl D. Bradley and the Daniel J Morrell in the late 1950's. And when you read the account of the great storm that claimed some 30 ships over a three day period in late November 1905 you will come to understand the powerful forces of nature that the Edmund Fitzgerald was up against back in 1975. The fact of the matter is that there are still a lot of unanswered questions as to why the Edmund Fitzgerald plunged to the bottom of Lake Superior. Was it human error? Had the crew been negligent in securing the ship? Was there too much weight on board? What about the possibility that the Fitz was structurally unsound? Or did Captain McSorley make a fatal navigational error when he took the vessel too close to the Six Fathom Shoal? "Mighty Fitz" explores each of these possibilities and many others in great detail. Michael Schumacher also discusses the continuing odyssey of attempts to get to the bottom of the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy. There are so many competing interests at play here. Family members want to ban furthur exploration of the wreckage and designate the site off-limits to everyone. And as new technolgies emerge others are bound and determined to discover once and for all just what happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald. The truth is that there are compelling arguments on both sides of these issues.

I found "Mighty Fitz: The Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to be a very well-written and entertaining book. It is clear that Michael Schumacher is passionate about his subject. I must say that I agree with at least a couple of the other Amazon reviewers who found that the lack of any kind of maps was a drawback for them. Had such illustrations been included I don't think I would have had any trouble rating "Mighty Fitz" a full five stars. It comes awfully close anyway. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Gaston H. Gonnet is a Professor in the Department of Informatik at ETH, Zurich. His research interests lie in symbolic and algebraic computation, system development, limit and series computation and heuristic algorithms, computational biochemistry algorithms, and the design and analysis of algorithms.

Ralf Scholl teaches mathematics, physics, and science and technology at the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Stuttgart. His interests lie in the didactics of teaching science and mathematics at high school to graduate level.

Ten Little Indians / And Then There Were None

There is a classic murder mystery story known as "the locked room mystery". Someone is found murdered in a room locked from the inside. No one could have left the room! How did it happen? In this story the locked room is an island where no one can enter or leave. The ten people on this island are murdered one by one. An old nursery rhyme of "ten little Indians" provides a blueprint for the mysterious deaths. Logically, the last survivor would be the presumed murderer, by the process of elimination. But what if this assumption was wrong? It may not sound rational but this story makes it appear so.

Ten people are invited or hired to visit Indian Island off the coast of Devon. After a good meal there is a recorded voice that accuses them of murder. The visitors begin dying off in the manner of that nursery rhyme. After searching the island they realize the murderer is one of the guests! Knowing this does not prevent more deaths. This story keeps your interest until the very end. Scotland Yard cannot figure out the solution until a message was found in a bottle at sea. The movie version modified and enhanced this story. No plan is ever perfect because of the many things that can happen.

This is an example of the classic English murder mystery. The murder exists to provide an intellectual puzzle to entertain the reader. The participants are mostly the middle-class, not average people. The scene is in a large house owned by a rich man. Raymond Chandler pointed out the differences in his essay "The Simple Art of Murder". Most murders occur because of lust or greed, to get it or to keep it. Chandler commented on the highly artificial murder plots which multiply clues that experienced detectives would see through. I found a clue in Chapter IX (but I had seen the movie decades ago).

Chapter XI references one locked room mystery in America. An old gentleman and his wife were killed with an axe. The maid couldn't have done it; the respectable middle-aged daughter was acquitted. No other explanation was ever found. Who killed them? [Arnold Brown's book explains it was done by someone who was kept hidden.]

About the Author

Henry R. Nau has taught political science and served in government for more than thirty years. He is currently Professor of Political Science and International Affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, specializing in international relations and U.S. foreign policy.

From 1981 to 1983, he served on the National Security Council as senior director responsible for international economic affairs. He also served, between 1975 and 1977, as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs in the Department of State. In 1977 he received the State Department's Superior Honor Award.

His books include At Home Abroad: Identity and Power in American Foreign Policy; Trade and Security: U.S. Policies at Cross-Purposes; The Myth of America's Decline: Leading the World Economy into the 1990s; and National Politics and International Technology: Nuclear Reactor Developments in Western Europe.

Got this book for a class. It is not terribly well written ~ some chapters are entirely too convoluted and confusing, and make it impossible to learn anything! The information is not presented in a clear fashion, and the concepts are not comprehensively explained. I would not recommend this book to anyone, and I am having to consult extracurricular sources to actually learn the material.

A fantastic party game with loads of room for improvisation

My husband and I held this game back in 1991, and I can still remember this great time we enjoyed. Our friends were so enthusiastic that following the game when we all went out for dessert, we were still dressed and acting like our characters! It is an absolutely incredible experience to step out of the humdrum life you live and suddenly become someone so exceptionally vile or unbelievably naive. The characters are very well written and are well worth the time invested for the game. If you're going to get this game and use it, make certain to have access to a good costume shop, costumes make the characters easier to remember when breaking for dinner.

I have done three of these with my friends, and this was by far my favorite. All the characters are very interesting, and this murder was certainly the most complex one we have had to solve. The plot is also a little more thought out than the other two, and the costumes for this were the best, provided you want something fancy and elegant and flashy. If you want to relive the excitement of Hollywood in the 1930's, then definitely get this game.

2016 CA law book is posted on CA BOP site for free. This book is outdated.

The CA laws are posted on line for free [...] This book is a good summary, but it will take you just as long to go through this book as it does to go through what is actually posted on CA BOP website and it does not have the benefit of being more straight-forward or easier to understand than the 2016 law book posted on CA BOP website. I bought this book on the recommendations of many of my friends who are already licensed in CA. This book is good because it has practice test questions in the back, but it's outdated and not worth the money (on top of what you've already spent on fees and the soul you've traded for student loans). It was published in 2013 and I do not know what is current and what is outdated. For example, the book says that Plan B is sold behind the counter-- is that still the case in CA? In the 3 other states I'm licensed in, Plan B is now OTC-- so I'm doubtful it is behind the counter in CA.

Sci-Fi take it to the next level

All Tomorrows Zombies offers a great variety of sci fi horror / zombie worlds. I used this book to drop zombies into my Star War RPG. I also have ran the AFMBE game world and this would be a fantastic expansion to the core rules. Because of the d20 conversion it was very easy to use his product with other rules sets. (I'm also going to buy Dungeons & Zombies and then drop that into my Pathfinder game.) It's packed with ideas, so even if you just need inspiration, this book has it. Excellent choice, buy this right now!

About the Author

A. Daniel Frankforter is Professor of History at the Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught for four decades. His undergraduate work was in the history of ideas and philosophy at Franklin and Marshall College. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Drew University, did graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Göttingen, and completed master’s and doctoral degrees in medieval history and religious studies at Penn State. His research interests are in English ecclesiastical history, the evolving status of women in medieval Europe, and textual criticism. Articles on these topics have appeared in such journals as Manuscripta, Church History, The British Studies Monitor, The Catholic Historical Review, The American Benedictine Review, The International Journal of Women’s Studies, and The Journal of Women’s History. His books include A History of the Christian Movement: An Essay on the Development of Christian Institutions, Civilization and Survival, The Shakespeare Name Dictionary (with J. Madison Davis), The Medieval Millennium: An Introduction, The Western Heritage, brief edition (with Donald Kagan, Stephen Ozment, and Frank Turner), The Heritage of World Civilizations, brief third edition (with Albert Craig, William Graham, Donald Kagan, Stephen Ozment, and Frank Turner), an edition and translation of Poullain de la Barre’s De L’Égalité des deux Sexes, and Stones for Bread: A Critique of Contemporary Worship. His most recent work is: Word of God/Words of Men: The Use and Abuse of Scripture. Over the course of his career he has developed 15 courses dealing with aspects of the ancient and medieval periods of Western civilization, the Judeo-Christian tradition, and gender issues. His service in the classroom has been acknowledged by the Penn State Behrend Excellence in Teaching Award and the prestigious Amoco Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching Performance.

William M. Spellman is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina Asheville and Director of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, a constorium of twenty-six institutions in the United States and Canada. He is a graduate of Suffolk University, Boston, and holds a PhD from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He is the author of John Locke and The Problem of Depravity (Oxford, 1988); The Latitudinarians and the Church of England (Georgia, 1993); John Locke (Macmillan, 1995): European Political Thought, 1600-1700 (Macmillan, 1997); Monarchies, 1000-2000 (Reaktion, 2000); The Global Community: Migration and the Making of the Modern World (Sutton, 2002): A Concise History of the World Since 1945 (Palgrave, 2006); Uncertain Identity: International Migration Since 1945 (Reaktion, 2008); and A Short History of Western Political Thought (Palgrave, 2011).
